Our patron saint is the Holy, Glorious All-laudable Apostle and Evangelist, Virgin, and Beloved Friend of Christ, John the Theologian. Saint John was the son of Zebedee and Salome, a daughter of Saint Joseph the Betrothed. He was called by our Lord Jesus Christ to be one of His Apostles, at the Sea of Galilee, at the same time as his elder brother James. Leaving behind their father, both brothers followed the Lord.
During the Last Supper, Saint John reclined next to the Lord, and laid his head upon His breast. When Jesus was arrested, sentenced, and crucified, Saint John was the only Apostle to remain with the Lord until the bitter end, at which time Jesus commended His own Mother into Saint John's care. Saint John was the first of the Apostles to approach the Tomb of the Lord after the Myrrh-Bearing Women brought news of the Resurrection. For the rest of his long life, he called for all Christians to love the Lord and one another, being known as Christ's "Apostle of Love."
In his old age, Saint John was exiled on the island of Patmos where he beheld the Lord enthroned in glory in a vision known as the Apocalypse or Revelation. Because he is the seer of the mysterious Judgments of God, Saint John alone among the Apostles is known as the "Theologian." Learn more about our patron saint here.
